Desert cycling in Israel: routes and planning

For a desert ride, the useful question is not just “How many kilometres?” It is “What is the longest stretch between confirmed support points, and what will we do if we cannot finish it?” Build the plan around those answers.

Choose an area and a specific route

The Negev, Arava and Judean Desert are separate catalogue areas. Start with a route description and inspect the start, finish and terrain. A loop close to your base and a point-to-point stage require different transport and support arrangements.

The Israel Bike Trail operator publishes its own sections and preparation material. Its bikepacking guidance describes mountain-bike terrain; do not assume that a touring bike or a heavily loaded setup fits a stage simply because a GPX is available. Match the specific stage to your equipment and experience.

Check the forecast and route notices

Use the regional forecast and warnings from the Israel Meteorological Service, including heat and flood information where relevant. Check the responsible land manager and trail operator for restrictions and closures. The guide does not provide a live weather or access status.

Keep a different route or date available if the conditions do not fit the plan. Do not treat a dry-looking channel on a map, a previous successful ride or a seasonal recommendation as confirmation of conditions on the day.

Build the ride around confirmed support

Mark the start, finish, agreed refill points and places where the group could leave the route. Confirm each water or support point with its operator, including access and opening arrangements. A spring symbol, a campsite name or a line in an old recording is not a confirmed drinking-water supply.

Plan supplies for your group, expected conditions and a delay; ask a knowledgeable local operator if you cannot establish what the ride requires. This guide does not assign a universal water quantity or guarantee mobile coverage. Agree how you will communicate and how support could reach an agreed access point.

For a shuttle or overnight stop, confirm bike capacity, pickup location and the booking directly. Put those details beside the GPX file so the entire group has the same plan.

Read the distance and climbing between support points

Open the route locally in the viewer. Inspect long climbs and the shape around your planned support points. The total ascent is useful context, but it does not measure sand, technical passages, pushing a loaded bike or headwind.

Check for disconnected segments and missing heights. A straight-looking connection in another app may conceal a gap; the viewer leaves separate segments apart. Compare a shorter variant before departure, and verify its terrain and access as carefully as the original.

Take the original GPX into a navigation app or device that you have checked offline. A shared PNG or embedded HTML widget is a discussion aid, not a navigable route file.

Regional routes in the catalogue

Counts describe catalogue entries when this page was built, not routes verified as open. Regional pages are in Hebrew. Check the individual route and its source before riding.

Tick items as you plan, or print this page from your browser. Ticks are not saved and do not certify that a route is suitable to ride.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for every desert ride?

This guide does not give one universal month. Use the forecast, warnings, daylight and conditions for the actual area and date, and change the plan when necessary.

Can I rely on water marked in a GPX?

A waypoint or map label does not confirm drinking water, opening hours or access. Verify the point directly and plan supplies around confirmed information.

Does the viewer calculate a safe completion time?

No. It shows recorded geometry and figures. Terrain, conditions, stops, equipment and the group’s abilities require a separate time plan.
