How to open a GPX file in your browser

A GPX file gives you route points, rather than a picture of a map. Open it in the viewer to see the route shape, distance and recorded elevation before planning a ride.

Open the GPX Viewer

Free · no account · GPX files processed in your browser

Open a file on a computer or phone

  1. Open the GPX Viewer and choose “Choose GPX file”. On a computer, you can also drag the file into the outlined area.
  2. Select the .gpx file from your device. On a phone, use the file picker to find it in your downloads or files app. If a download is a ZIP archive, extract the GPX first.
  3. The route appears on the map, with its distance and elevation profile when the file contains heights. Use “Try an example” if you want to explore the tool without your own file.

Read the map and elevation profile

Green markers show segment starts and orange markers show segment ends. Separate track segments stay separate: a gap is not an extra stretch of riding. Use the + and − controls to zoom. The map background is off initially; you can turn it on to see roads and places.

Distance adds the recorded paths in every accepted track and route, without connecting separate segments. If a file includes duplicate or overlapping paths, these still contribute to the total. The elevation chart uses distance from the start, with gaps wherever heights are missing.

Recorded ascent and descent add height changes between adjacent points, without smoothing. GPS noise, missing heights and different export methods can explain why a device shows another climbing total. The viewer does not fill missing elevations from an external service.

If your file does not open

  • Choose the original GPX, rather than a screenshot, a web page saved as .gpx or a compressed archive. Renaming another format does not convert it.
  • Each file must be no larger than 5 MB, with at most 100,000 points and 1,000 segments. Export a shorter route if a file exceeds these limits.
  • At least one track segment or route needs two valid points. A file containing only waypoints cannot draw a route.
  • An invalid XML or coordinate message usually calls for a fresh export from the source. A missing elevation message still allows viewing the route and distance.

What happens to your file?

The viewer reads your GPX in this browser and keeps route data in memory. It does not upload or store the file on a server. Clearing the route or reloading the page removes the loaded route data; it does not delete or edit the original file on your device.

The optional OpenStreetMap background requests map tiles and reveals the viewed area and your IP address to that provider. Route names, file names and coordinates are not included in the viewer’s usage events. Changing the page language opens a fresh viewer without your loaded files.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No account is needed to open your own local GPX in the viewer. Downloading a route from the Rochvim Kavua catalogue is a separate flow that requires free sign-in.

Which GPX formats can I open?

The viewer supports GPX 1.0 and 1.1 tracks and routes, including separate segments and common files without a namespace. Waypoint-only files are not supported.

Can I navigate or edit the GPX here?

The viewer displays and compares files. It does not provide live navigation, edit the original file or check trail access. Inspect local conditions separately before a ride.
